Today we restored an old marble terrazzo floor in Nottingham, the terrazzo floor tiles we laid in an Victorian porch and had seen many years of use, full of wear and tear and covered with an old varnish. The tiles certainly didn’t look their best.

Our task was to diamond polish the terrazzo floor tiles in a high gloss finish, but first we needed to remove all the lippage from the floor which took some considerable effort as the lippage was really quite bad.

As you can see from the photos, the floor really does look a lot bright, cleaner and safer now the lippage is removed.

A beautiful Minton floor in Newark, Nottinghamshire from the Victorian era. In this Victorian Floor Restoration we needed to remove loose and damaged tiles and manufacture new encaustic tiles in order to bring out the floors full potential.

Work Detail
Our dedicated team of Victorian floor restorers expertly removed the damaged tiles from the floor creating very little dirt, dust or disruption ready to accept the replacement tiles. Outside our professional diamond tile cutting machine was used to precisely cut both reclaimed original tiles and handmade replicas to imperial sizes. A lot of work went into to sourcing accurate matches to ensure the very best blend, this included a sympathetically coloured grout and the manufacture of new encaustic tiles.

The final phase of this Victorian floor restoration in Newark was to clean and seal the floor using our specialised restorative cleaning process. Victorian Quarry Tile Restoration Nottingham

A very old floor in Stoke Bardolf, Nottinghamshire which had been covered over with screed of differing strengths and mixtures, some relatively easy to remove; others not. The whole process was very labour intensive as it wasn’t possible to grind the screed off without damaging the tiles beneath.

As the floor is in a Victorian cottage the Victorian quarry tiles have been laid on a lime substrate without any damp proofing. Taking this into account, we used a highly breathable matt finish on the tiles, which would both protect from staining and at the same time allow the floor to breath effectively.

Here we have a Victorian floor in a famous period property in Budby Nottinghamshire which was in serious need of restoration. Having been trapped beneath carpet for the many years the tiles had become ingrained with dirt, the carpet adhesive had welded itself to the tiles and plenty of paints had soaked into the tile body.

We also had to replace a considerable amount of damaged and missing tiles from our stocks of reclaimed tiles.

This Victorian hallway floor in Mansfield Nottingham needed a fair amount of repair work to be completed before we could start the cleaning process. The tiles are Ferrolite by Platt’s, some of the hardest tiles you come across in the Victorian floor restoration business, unfortunately this hardness does not prevent them from stains and ingrained dirt or absorbing paint splatters; which this floor was full of.

The first task was to break down the huge amount of paint, then the deep cleaning of the Victorian chequer board could begin. The finish is a tough hard wearing gloss finish.

Victorian Floor Restoration Gedling Nottingham

Originally trapped under an inch of bitumen damp proofing this Victorian floor in Gedling Nottingham was literally full of stains from the bitumen and linseed oil, not a single tile was untouched.

The bitumen had effectively prevented the tiles and substrate below from breathing and drying out naturally, as a result the substrate had buckled in a few places with tiles becoming loose.

Everything within our chemical armoury was thrown at the stains; but nothing touched them. We used a colour enhancing breathable sealer to produce a hard wearing matt finish.

Minton Floor Restoration Newark Nottingham

This original Minton Hollins Victorian tiled hallway in Newark Nottinghamshire was in great condition save for a few areas that had been previously repaired with decorators filler and just a few cracked tiles.

The floor had definitely been sealed with Linseed oil at some stage, you can see the ugly brown tinge in the ‘before’ shots. As this oil dries into the tile body it take dirt etc in with and later oxidises to form a hard coating; very tough to remove.

After thoroughly cleaning the floor, the hallway tiles were treated to our premium sealer and then a satin polish.

Minton Tiles Restoration Thorneywood Nottingham

Kellie and I definitely rate this floor as one of the most beautiful we have worked on, it blends a variety of colours and encaustics around a simple cross formation; absolutely stunning.

Over the floors life it has seen some serious movement and shifting, with sections buckled and tented and with large plates shifting apart in a staggered path. This much meant that it was impossible to repair to its original alignment without taking up the majority of the floor.

Then as we starting removing some of the buckled sections we notice that large amounts of the tiles had been fixed down with hot weld glue (not by the present owners). Some of the movement had been caused by a reaction between the concrete and the metal supports, the resultant rust had lifted the concrete. The rest of the movement would probably be down to the lack of adequate foundations for a property of this size.
