A large Victorian tiled hallway in Derby. The floor was covered with the mess from all the previous trades such plasterers and decorators who had splattered the floor with plaster, Pva glue and paint. On top of this the floor was stained with old linseed oil and wax which the porous tiles a dull and dirty appearance

The first task was to remove the thick splatters of paint and plaster before thoroughly cleaning the floor with our specialised equipment which you find no where else.

The finish we applied to the Victorian Minton tiles was a breathable satin finish which helps protect the floor from staining and further abrasion.

This Victorian Minton tiled floor in Derby had seen a lot of traffic and substrate movement over the years, the majority of which had been caused by rising moisture from the areas surround the cellar.

As you can see from the original photos the floor runs in various directions, the pattern has shifted as a result of the substrate movement. The damaged floor areas consist largely of damaged unsalvageable tiles and the floor had an overall dirty appearance.

Using a combination of reclaimed original tiles and handmade replicas we removed the old substrate and relaid the tiles using the best overall flow, naturally some compromises needed to be made.

This Victorian floor in Alvaston Derby was covered with a smoke screen of old wood varnish was literally draining every ounce of life from the tiles. The problem with varnish is that is designed for covering timber and has a hard time lasting on tiles, usually flaking away in patches. The ingredients stain the lighter coloured tiles and make for a patchy appearance.

A simply stunning Victorian Minton tiled floor in Derby, full of vivid colours and encaustic tiles, this really is a wonderful Victorian hallway floor. These are the kind of floors we like, nice small mosaic pieces intricately placed to stunning patterns.

There were quite a few loose tiles as the hallway is above a cellar, this loosening of the tiles is possibly caused a slight flex in the timber as you walk along the length of the hallway. The tiles themselves where in very good condition with a few splatters of paint, a couple of oil stains. But the main discolouring was from an old sealer than we stripped away.

This stunning Victorian floor in Derby by Minton Hollins of Stoke is a beautiful example of Victorian craftsmanship and considering the age of the floor, all is in good order.

At some stage the floor was covered with vinyl tiles as there is evidence of where the adhesive has etched the tile surface, there are also the odd blemish and bleaching from the use of methyl chloride based stripping products. Unfortunately we were unable to remove all traces of these but where able to reduce their appearance with careful cleaning and colour enhancement of the tiles.

Every effort has been used to remove as much staining as physically possible using our deep cleaning products and new cleaning equipment, following this we fully seal the tile body to protect the floors from further staining.

Edwardian Floor Restoration Derby

This Edwardian tiled hallway floor in Derby was originally covered with parquet flooring, so you can imagine how much adhesive and bitumen needed to be removed before any restoration work could be undertaken.

The tiles in this floor were manufactured by E Smith of Coalville and generally in good condition. However the floor had quite a lot damp in the substrate and watermarks where evident on some tiles.

After a thorough deep cleaning of the floor we applied a highly breathable sealer to allow the floor to continue to dry out whilst providing a stain barrier to the tiles.

We found this Victorian tiled floor to be in really good condition with just a few loose tiles to re-fix. After a thorough cleaning of the Minton tiles we dried them off thoroughly and sealed tile body.

Once this was completed a hard wearing satin polish was applied, this will effectively make cleaning far quicker and easier.

A wonderful Minton tiled hallway in Derby, this Victorian geometric floor was in a nice overall condition with only a few loose tiles that needed re-fixing.

It was pretty obvious that at some stage the floor had been treated with an oil, artefacts of the oil staining were visible in some places.

After giving the floor a thorough deep cleaning we applied our sealers and then onto the hard wearing satin finish.
