Here we have a Victorian floor in a famous period property in Budby Nottinghamshire which was in serious need of restoration. Having been trapped beneath carpet for the many years the tiles had become ingrained with dirt, the carpet adhesive had welded itself to the tiles and plenty of paints had soaked into the tile body.

We also had to replace a considerable amount of damaged and missing tiles from our stocks of reclaimed tiles.

Using our eco-friendly cleaning process we were able to strip away pretty much all of the contaminants found allowing us to seal the floor with a hard wearing breathable satin finish.

A very old quarry tile floor in a cottage in Middleton Warwickshire, that had been seen by many of our competitors who failed to impress or show any degree of expert knowledge, hence we were chosen for the project.

The vinyl tiles that covered the whole floor were securely fixed down using a solvent adhesive, much of this adhesive being used to level out any eroded tile faces. You’ll also notice that moisture has tried to escape from the joints between the vinyl tiles, proof that these unglazed tile floors really do need to breath. Unfortunately as a result the tile faces where damaged by the trapping of said rising moisture. You can also see where the solvent adhesive has bleached the tiles, again a very common problem.

As the floor presented a history of rising moisture / damp problems we chose to us a highly breathable sealer that protects the floor from further staining. While this particular sealer doesn’t enhance the colours that much, the breathability is second to none; which was a very important feature.

Trapped beneath a carpet and underlay for many years these Victorian quarries tiles had experienced a large amount of rising damp that had failed to escape due to the carpet. The salt deposits which would normally have been brushed away, had as a result hardened and pitted the tile surface. Naturally it would prove impossible to remove all traces of efflorescence from these period tiles as the residue was so deep.

Our first task was to remove as much of the hardened salt without causing damage to the tiles, then to scrub away any oil sealants and allow the floor to breath. The largest majority of the floors problems have been caused by lack of breathability, so a highly breathable sealer was needed to ensure that the damp issues subsided over time.

The key point was to turn the floor into a robust and usable feature of the house which we achieved by deep cleaning and sealing the floor with the very finest of sealers, which protect the floor from water, oil and dirt and make for an easily maintained floor surface.

This Victorian tiled hallway in Ely Cambridgeshire was full character locked beneath layers of dirt, glazed with old shellac varnish. Over the years dirt had become entrapped by different oil finishes that had been applied, the largest majority where removed by our eco friendly chemicals; some had soak too far into the tile body. After we stripped away the varnish it was the task of deep cleaning the floor and removing traces of cementitious haze and paint splatters.

Restored by Dave Carr and Kellie from Carr Restoration using our own branded restoration chemicals and sealers. The floor finish used was a hard wearing breathable satin gloss that is easily maintained with our ‘Carr Care’ maintainer product and recoated using ‘Carr Finish’

Here we have two Victorian floors in Chesterfield that we have restored, a quarry tiled kitchen area and a geometric Victorian hallway with tiles by Campbell Tile & Brick.

Firstly the Victorian geometric floor required a lot of work, there were literally hundreds of loose tiles that needed reaffixing, this would have been a much simpler process if the floor hadn’t seen so much movement over the years, as a result the floor was very uneven; very hard to match the different floor levels.

The quarry tiled kitchen floor required a really deep clean to remove a very heavy build up of old sealers that had trapped dirt between the layers, the sealer created a smoke screen effect over the floor.

A Victorian hallway tiled in a basket weave pattern of Minton Hollins tiles in Solihull West Midlands, overall the floor was in a nice solid condition with the odd character crack here and there. We reaffixed any loose tiles that were found before the cleaning process was started.

As you may see from the ‘before’ photos the floor was heavily stained with old oils, bitumen, solvent carpet adhesive and finally red paint. This was definitely a challenge, but a challenge we rose to.

Using our range of Victorian restoration chemicals we were able remove all but the most soaked in stains; remember these stains have been there 50 plus years. We then thoroughly sealed the tiled hallway with a colour enhancing satin sealer which not allows the floor to breath but also helps protect the floor from further staining.

There was an awful lot of oil staining on this Victorian floor restoration project in Blythe Bridge Staffordshire. The floor pattern made good use of some distinctive encaustic tiles along with a good use of colour that lent themselves very well to our colour enhancing sealers.

Our first task was to strip away all the previous coating or sealers, this would allow us to reach the real dirt and staining.

Once the floor was deep cleaned, a breathable impregnating sealer was applied before finally finish off with a hard wearing satin polish; breathable of course.

Plenty of staining from carpet adhesives and rubber underlays are dotted across this wonderful Victorian encaustic tiled hallway in Kettering Northamptonshire. As usual the natural earth coloured tiles are the worst affected by staining from the solvent adhesives, the less porous harder whites, blues and greens have largely avoided the same level of staining. Around the edges there was evidence of plasterers and builders mess ground into the border tiles.

We started the restoration of this Kettering Victorian tiled hallway by first stripping away all traces of polishes, waxes and oils before tackling the stains and dirt contaminants that were ground in.

The floor took on a new light once sealed with our premium breathable polish, which not only helps protect the floor from staining and scratches but also makes for a very low maintenance floor.

A truly beautiful work of art. This original Minton floor in Chesterton Cambridgeshire dating from the 1850′s had a coating of old varnish applied over dirt creating a smoke screen effect that reduced the impact of these beautiful floors and in turn prevented the floor from breathing. The floor consisted of many highly detailed and intricate encaustic tiles along with some larger than the norm fields at 7 1/4″.

The first task was to remove all that horrid varnish that had discoloured, then remove the underlying dirt. We enhanced the colours by using our unique breathable sealers and a satin finish.

These Victorian floor tiles were manufactured Godwin of Hereford and here we see how wonderful they look in the Victorian hallway in Nuneaton Warwickshire. Overall the floor was in a very nice condition with only a few loose tiles that needed re-fixing.

The floor already had an old oil and wax finish which had discoloured overtime; they always do. So this was the first thing to be removed, unfortunately some of the old oil had discoloured in the tile body leaving a few minor stains.

After a thorough deep cleaning of these Victorian floor tiles we sealed them with breathable sealers both of an impregnating and topical type, which not only help protect the tiles from further staining, but also increase their colour depth and make for a much easier cleaning experience.

The outside was also sealed with a hard wearing UV resistant impregnating sealer that enhances the Victorian tile colours whilst protecting them from staining. Naturally this was also a breathable sealer suitable for period tiling.
